Medical Dry Needling is a treatment that focuses on the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. It is also known as myofascial trigger point treatment or intramuscular stimulation.
Within clinical practice, we see a large number of patients who present daily with pain coming from the muscles and its connective tissue. Our understanding of this is that these patients are suffering from myofascial pain syndrome, which is a condition characterised by painful trigger points (hyper irritable spots within the muscle fibres). Some patients refer to these as knots in the muscle.
Treatment involves placing a fine needle at the site of the trigger point. The advantages of Dry needling are well documented and include an immediate reduction in local, referred and widespread pain, restoration of range of motion and restoration of muscle activation patterns.
Dry needling is an effective and safe treatment for a variety of conditions, which is done according to sound proven procedures. At Edinburgh Chiropractic Group it is used as either a stand-alone treatment or used in conjunction with chiropractic manipulation.
